The Vocals:
The distinctive 2NE1 sound owes a lot to the girl's vocals, and that is extremely apparent here. While there isn't any extreme range for the girls to work with here, they still do a great job of delivering emotion and meaning. The production too works to add to the basic idea of what the vocals are, instead of adding new and unnecessary elements.
The Visuals:
Wow YG really went full out on this one. Gorgeous scenery, amazing effects and a great setting really make this MV just glorious to watch. The rap breakdown section pretty much shows off all of this MV's best points, with the girl's clothes, weird CGI and some great scenes taking center stage. Seriously I forgive YG for the MV delay and so should you.
The Music:
That god damned piano beat that plays throughout this song. Seriously it is one of the catchiest bits of music I've ever heard. I can always hear it, even when it's being buried under all the other instruments it's still there demanding my attention. It kind of reminds me of a song from the Bastion soundtrack.
The rest of it is good stuff too, I particularly like the drum beat at the front of the song that plays really rapidly. If you zero in on it it doesn't sound very rhythm-y at all, but it works really well with the rest of the song.
The Consistency:
Well here's the catch. The rap breakdown. It seriously has no place in a song like this. I know that K-POP has an unholy fascination with putting rap into everything, but a slow rap segment (ie. LeeSSang's Tears) would've fit the song so much better than what we got. As it stands the breakdown ruins the flow of the song. It's got a beautiful melodic feel one second, and then we are into "I Am The Best" levels of aggression. No thanks YG.
The Song:
Without the rap breakdown segment I would gladly give this song a 10/10. I can't express how much I love the piano tune and how I think the song really fits well together, instruments, vocals, productions et al. Unfortunately based YG is not so kind.
8/10 only because the rap grew on me.
The Video:
I want more of this everywhere. The video is gorgeous, expensive as whoah (they weren't lying) and very fitting to the song. Look at that rap breakdown for example, fits the abrupt tone change very well.
I didn't understand the story at all though, if there was one. All I got was some strange "Elysium" vibes.
9/10.
The Conclusion:
Song: 8/10
Video: 9/10
Average: 8.5/10
