MV Review - Girl's Generation Mr. Mr.

The Vocals:

Same old Girl's Generation in this. The mix of vocal harmony ,single rap lines and individual solos is distinctly SNSD. All the girls do a nice job here. Unfortunately some of that nice job is made redundant by the rabid over production all over this song. The dance break with the AY AY AY AY AY AY had the possibility of being forgiven (MORE ON THAT LATER), but at 0:40-0:42 and around 1:58 the song forgets what it is and what it wants to be and starts imitating the worst of dubstep. It's made even more of a shame by the fact that these sections immediately follow the best parts of this song; Sunny's bits at 0:32 and 1:47.

The Visuals:

Let's count all the different concepts here shall we?
  • The surgery bit that takes up the majority of the song.
  • Dancing in the car park.
  • Dancing in the SM box... with fedoras!
  • Dancing in those black dresses <3
But now is where it get's weird, pause at 1:06 and you'll notice a whole new concept. Unfiltered too. I guess the people at SM did loose that footage. Someone teach them what a back up is.

The girls look great in all of these, with Hyoyeon, Taeyeon, Jessica and Seohyun a level above. Hyo in the surgery, Taeyeon and Jessica in the black dresses and Seohyun in that red dress! Not that the cinematography is gonna help you appreciate them.

The Music:

The music is great. It's one of the instances of dubstep being used well in KPOP. The start of the song is very different to normal kpop and actually sounds nice. While the music doesn't have a catchy beat or an amazing hook, it has pure consistency. Even the dance break sounds really good if you take the obnoxious AY AY AY bit out. It's made of the same stuff as the beginning. Good stuff too, as far as I'm concerned, musically, these parts are the best and make me feel really excited.

The Consistency:

No song killing, flow ruining break down. No IGAB-style mix and mash of 50 different songs. 10/10 [SM] should produce again.

The Song:

This song had  every chance of being an extremely good song. There is a good beat and rhythm to certain parts of it. I personally extremely enjoyed the chorus and found he ending verse to be amazing with how it got more and more intense and then just died off. Great stuff.

As I said before Sunny's lines are a highlight for me, the intensity and the final climax in them are great. And then they are followed by the worst part of the song.

Unfortunately It's not all good. The aforementioned over production is a glaring issue. It's not a song killer, but it takes away from what could have been a great experience.

Overall the music is a 7/10.

The Video:

Oh dear God. What is this? Overtly close close-up half covered up with lens flare, while really annoying filters change the colour palette every 5 seconds. Add Sistar's Give It to Me levels of ridiculously fast scene changes and you are left with a mess. At least give it to me changed between full shot to full shot, non of this close up in the face nonsense.

Oh and here's why the AY AY AY part is not going to be forgiven: WTF is up with that 5 second dance break? If this song doesn't get a dance ver. the injustice done to Hyoyeon will forever mar my opinion of SM.

At least the girls looked nice (when you could see them.) 4/10.

The Conclusion:

Song: 7/10
Video: 4/10
Average: 5.5/10

I will re score this song if a Dance MV showed up.
